Producer. Arranger. Composer. Music Director. Trombonist. His critically-acclaimed works, ranging from symphonic to progressive rock, have made John Hinchey a familiar name in music circles around the world.
His most ambitious project to date: a collaboration with Californian Nick D’Virgilio of Spock’s Beard and Nashville engineer/producer Mark Hornsby. The three musicians created and recorded their own interpretation of the ground-breaking Genesis album, “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.” This “rewiring” of the classic rock masterpiece features John’s arrangements for horns and strings that reviewers have applauded for helping to bring a fresh sound to the music, while remaining true to the original recording. A live performance was given of “The Lamb” at The Basement in early January of 2008, and in the summer of 2009 the entire album was performed on stage in Los Angeles with a 14-piece band. The CD is available at www.progrockrecords.com.
Another exciting project from the summer of 2009 featuring John’s arrangements was a fabulous new show which had it’s first run at The Wilma Theatre in Philadelphia, “The Rock Tenor.” This high energy Rock/Broadway/Classical fusion show features vocalist Rob Evan.
One of John’s major influences was Hank Levy, the noted jazz composer. John studied composition with him at Towson University in Baltimore where he received his BS in music. Since graduation, this native of Stoneham, MA, has successfully pursued a full-time music career from his home in Nashville and built an impressive list of clients and performance credits.
As a trombonist in concerts and on studio recordings, his credits include “A Chorus Line,” “Bob Fosse’s Dancin’,” “The Hopeville Tour” (featuring gospel artists Kirk Franklin, Yolanda Adams and Donnie McClurkin), House band for the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame American Master’s Concert series, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin, The Funk Brothers, Hank Williams Jr,, BJ Thomas, Sara Evan, Smokie Norful, and Mike Farris among others.
